Genetics undeniably play a role in singing. Your physiology affects the timbre of your voice and some singers are born with vocal apparatus that naturally makes their voice sound good. But there are many factors aside from genetics that create a good singer.


Genetics play a large role in your singing ability. The size and shape of your vocal folds, skull, nasal cavities and facial structure can all influence your tone and how your voice sounds. Singing is also thought to be genetic because gender can affect your voice; differences in the size of the larynx means men have deeper voices while women have higher, breathier tones.

The natural timbre of your voice is determined by genetics, but you can learn how to train and develop your voice. Pitch, range, tune, and confidence are all aspects of singing that can be learnt and developed.


Learning vibrato requires good posture, singing from the diaphragm, and good breath control. Vibrato is a skill that is developed, rather than taught. As you get older and your voice matures, you will naturally develop a vibrato. Listen out for the fastpitch oscillation in your voice when your practice, and focus on developing it.


You should note that singing in a lower register will be more challenging for women than for men. But work with the lowest note you can within your chest without straining your voice, keeping your larynx low and relaxed.


Throat singing can damage your voice if you do not do it proficiently. Therefore, it would be most helpful to work with a professional voice teacher, vocal coach, or instructor who can train you in the best techniques for how to sing to avoid straining your vocal folds and damaging your voice when learning to throat sing.


Ability to have command over the voice and singing with ease is developed by systematic voice training. Once the learner is comfortable with singing in pitch and has obtained sufficient control over the swarasthanas/notes, voice agility training must begin. The earlier, the better. This kind of a vocal training must be tailor-made for each individual, keeping in mind the nature of the voice, tonal quality, range limitations and weight of the voice.

Practice this while conducting a simple breathing exercise of 10 slow inhales and exhales without dropping the chest. Let the pressure from your fingers do the work to keep your chest lifted. The harder they press the easier it will be for your chest to remain up. Maintain the high chest throughout inhalation and exhalation. This is a great start to programming the correct muscles memory for your singing voice. Remember to relax the back of the neck while you maintain pressure on the chest.

Vocal limitations: Age will undoubtedly bring changes to your voice. Healthy living can delay some changes, but no one stays young forever. At some point --like the rest of your body -- your voice will age. Larynx cartilages become harder (and therefore less flexible) with age. This may reduce a person's pitch range, which is particularly significant for those who enjoy singing. The respiratory system tends to work less efficiently as we age, thus speaking will become a more difficult task.


It is well known that smoking can lead to lung or voice box (laryngeal) cancer. When you or someone you know breathes in primary or secondhand smoke, it passes by the vocal cords and can cause significant irritation and swelling. This can permanently change the quality, nature, and capability of your voice.


Vocal blow-out stems from both external and internal conditions. The main external conditions are late hours, insufficient rest, bad nutrition, alcohol, drugs, smoky clubs, PA and monitor problems, incorrect microphone design for your voice, and competing with band volume (sigh). The key factor, however, is internal: improper use of your vocal instrument when singing powerfully. To scope this out and get a handle on it, an understanding of your instrument is necessary.


This makes it difficult for your voice to work well and you may find yourself tightening throat and tongue muscles in an effort to hit the note. This stress and strain will choke off your sound killing resonance, cause you to go off-pitch or miss the note entirely, run into register break and at the very least will result in vocal fatigue. The problem usually magnifies as you sing higher and louder.


Practicing with this new awareness may at first take some extra thought, but it soon becomes second nature. Resultantly, your sound is enhanced and it is easier to sing the way you want! Furthermore, lemon is a natural disinfectant that can get rid of toxins in your body. This is a fantastic way to keep your voice strong and healthy. While citric acid can be drying, it also can break down any mucus build-up in your throat. Therefore, you need to work out whether lemon helps your voice or not. Try lemon and warm water before singing and see if it helps your vocal cords.


What you eat right before a performance can seriously affect your singing abilities. Some foods can make your voice sound better whilst some can have a negative effect. Flush away any phlegm caused by certain fruits, by drinking plenty of water.

You may find some sources that suggest how to make your voice deeper with elaborate voice exercises that allegedly help you lower the pitch of your voice. However, the bad news is that many of these are either disproven or untested.
